The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
